7 Pickleball Paddles Banned After Testing

“The integrity of the game lies in the standards we uphold.” – Unknown

In a significant move to maintain fair play and equipment consistency, USA Pickleball has announced the decertification of seven pickleball paddles from its approved equipment list, effective July 1, 2025. This decision stems from the implementation of a new testing standard, the Paddle/Ball Coefficient of Restitution (PBCoR), designed to measure and limit the “trampoline effect” in paddles.

The following pickleball paddles, currently retailing from $250 to $280, have exceeded testing standards and will be sunset on July 1, 2025 for sanctioned tournament play only:

  • JOOLA: Perseus 14mm Mod TA-15
  • JOOLA: Perseus 16mm Mod TA-15
  • Gearbox: Pro Power Elongated
  • ProKennex: Black Ace Ovation
  • ProKennex: Black Ace Pro
  • ProKennex: Black Ace LG
  • ProKennex: Black Ace XF

The PBCoR standard was introduced in the fourth quarter of 2024 to address concerns about pickleball paddles providing excessive bounce, which could offer players an undue advantage. Paddles failing to meet this criterion have been removed to preserve the sport’s integrity.

Background on JOOLA Gen 3 Paddles

This isn’t the first instance of paddle decertification. In May 2024, USA Pickleball removed all JOOLA Gen 3 paddles from its approved list after JOOLA disclosed that incorrect paddles were submitted for certification in November 2023. This administrative oversight led to the delisting of these paddles from sanctioned tournaments.

Manufacturer Responses

JOOLA has announced plans to retire the Perseus Mod TA-15 from competitive play starting July 1, 2025. They are offering a 50% discount on a new Perseus model, set to launch in March 2025, to affected players. This upcoming paddle is designed to comply with the latest USA Pickleball standards.

ProKennex has contested the decertification, asserting that their paddles have consistently met standards for over two years without issues. They attribute their paddles’ performance to proprietary technologies and intend to appeal the decision.

Gearbox has not yet publicly commented on the “Gearbox: Pro Power Elongated” being banned from sanctioned tournaments by USA Pickleball.

Implications for Players

Pickleball players using the decertified pickleball paddles can continue to do so in sanctioned tournaments until June 30, 2025. Starting July 1, 2025, these paddles will be prohibited in official competitions. Recreational players are not directly affected by this change, but it’s advisable to verify paddle legality with local clubs or event organizers.

Game Point

USA Pickleball’s proactive measures underscore its commitment to upholding the sport’s standards and ensuring equitable play. By refining equipment regulations, the organization aims to foster a competitive yet fair environment for all participants and support the growth and fairness of pickleball for years to come.

See you on the courts!
